taping versus not taping your lyra

I have been performing on taped lyras. I recently bought a new one and it is so beautiful untaped, just the shiny steel circle, that I would like to try keeping it untaped. Would anyone be willing to share their thoughts on how they feel about bare vs. taped bars?

Is your grip as solid on an untaped lyra? Does rosin, or chalk, work as well. How about in the summer? Does the steel get slippery?

ooh, I loved the shiny pretty silver too, when I got my lyra, but unfortunately I almost slid off the thing after a few minutes of performing because the steel gets slippery. I have not tried it with that spray rosin that some people use, but it might work. It might also leave a super sticky nasty residue...
I have taped only the bottom 1/4-1/3 of the circle so that I have a solid grip, but still get the pretty shininess. You could find some black tape to stick on - see if there are a couple of moves that you need a firm grip on and just tape a hand-hold's worth of the bar...

Good luck , let us know how it goes!

Thank yu for your thougts, Chels. I still am using my heavy, solid steel, taped lyra and have not yet ventured to tape the new, much lighter weight, hollow one. I got the lighter weight one to give me more versatility with what I do. But I haven't approached the shiny steel with my tape yet. I like the idea of just taping the 1/4-1/3 bottom of the circle, and a bit at the top, that you suggested.
